Waveguides, device connections and passive optical components exhibit optical losses, which often need to be compensated with optical amplifiers. The different material systems are used because they each provide different advantages and limitations depending on the function to be integrated. These devices require a variety of different materials and fabrication techniques making it difficult to realize all of them on a single chip. For these reasons, integrated optical circuits have not reached by far the complexity of electronic integrated circuits.
